My Story
It began as a hobby in junior high, with a single spiral notebook filled with random phrases and sentences that didn’t have meaning yet. At the time, I was heavily involved in theatre and band, and somewhere along the way, between the fictional characters I would pretend to be and the rhythm of music, those aimless words started to become much more.
By high school, I had several journals. My friends would find me frantically scribbling away in them during class and lunch. Senior year, I signed up for a creative writing class that became the true spark to my literary fire. I was suddenly writing short stories, plays, poems, songs—the works. As they sang in Hamilton: I was writing “Nonstop.” (I even had the pleasure of seeing one of my short plays come to life on stage when it was performed by the high school theatre department.)
My renewed passion for writing led me to the University of Houston, where I pursued a bachelor’s degree in English and enrolled in its undergraduate Creative Writing program. While there, I was writing more short fiction and poetry, and my carefully crafted pieces earned recognition multiple times, including an honorable mention for the University of Houston’s Provost Prize for Poetry and the opportunity to read my work at campus literary events.
I also became a Fiction Editor—and eventually Editor-in-Chief—of Glass Mountain, UH’s undergraduate literary journal. These roles gave me a new perspective: Stories aren’t just entertainment; they’re how we remember where we came from and where we’re going. They’re how we make sense of the world and find meaning in chaos. They’re how we bridge generations, cultures, and communities.
My work with Glass Mountain made me realize this one irrefutable fact: I didn’t just want to write my own stories—I also wanted to dedicate my career to shaping and sharing other people’s stories.
This realization led me to intern with the Editorial department at Bright Sky Press, an indie book publisher, where I worked with both emerging and established authors. From there, after graduating with my Bachelor’s, I pursued my Master’s in Publishing to deepen my understanding of the publishing industry, from traditional print production to digital publishing.
Since then, my professional journey has taken me beyond stories and books and into the broader world of words: content and communications. Over the past ten years, I’ve worn many hats: writer, editor, content director, managing editor, and communications lead, to name a few. I’ve managed teams of writers and assistant editors, launched internal newsletters, developed content calendars, and helped various organizations—including publishers, nonprofits, and entertainment conventions—share their knowledge and stories with clarity and purpose.
Today, you’ll find me guiding communications projects by day and editing a variety of articles and stories by night. When I’m not working, you’ll likely find me writing in one of my many journals with a few books, a video game controller, and a cup of coffee at my side, hoping to create the next New York Times best-seller. I’m not there yet, but don’t worry—my story isn’t over.
